Defibrillators, or AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators), are life-saving devices designed to be used by anyone, yet many people hesitate to use them because they’re unsure how they work. Understanding the basics can help you act quickly and confidently in an emergency.

Can I hurt someone by using a defibrillator?

No. AEDs are designed to be safe. They will only deliver a shock if it’s needed. If the casualty isn’t in cardiac arrest, the device will not shock, even if you press the button. Using a defibrillator correctly can significantly increase someone’s chances of survival.

Where can I find my nearest defibrillator?

In an emergency, always call 999. The emergency operator can direct you to the closest available AED. In the UK, defibrillators are also mapped on The Circuit, the national defibrillator network, which connects locations directly with ambulance services. Defibrillators can often be found in public places such as train stations, airports, shopping centres, gyms, and village halls.

Can a defibrillator be used on a child?

Yes, AEDs can be used safely on children. For children aged one to eight, use paediatric pads or paediatric mode if available. For children over eight, standard adult pads can be used. If a paediatric AED is not available for an infant or young child, using an adult AED is still better than doing nothing. Always follow the pad placement diagrams and the AED voice instructions.

Do I still need to do CPR if I use a defibrillator?

Yes. CPR should be started as soon as possible and continued until the defibrillator tells you to stop. The AED will guide you through when to start and stop compressions, ensuring that the casualty receives the best chance of survival.

Build confidence with training

While AEDs are designed for anyone to use safely, taking a half-day defibrillator course can help you feel confident and familiar with the device before an emergency occurs. Hands-on practice ensures you know exactly what to do, so you can act quickly and effectively when every second counts.
