Snake bites in the UK are rare – and deaths even rarer – but as sleepy snakes wake up in spring, accidental bites can happen. How to respond is covered in The First Aid Team’s Forestry First Aid Course, which includes specific training for outdoor environments and remote situations.
The adder is the UK’s only venomous snake. Its bite is not usually fatal, but it can be painful and cause swelling or allergic reactions.
Certain groups are more at risk from complications including children, older adults and those with underlying health conditions.
If bitten, always seek medical attention immediately, even if symptoms seem mild.
✅ Call 999 or take the person to A&E
✅ Keep the person still and calm
✅ Reassure them, serious harm is rare
✅ Immobilise the limb and keep the bite below heart level
❌ Do not suck out venom
❌ Do not cut the wound
❌ Do not apply a tourniquet
❌ Do not give alcohol or painkillers
Some snake bites, especially from exotic pets or snakes abroad, are much more serious. Venomous bites can:
Be painless at first
Cause tissue damage
Disrupt nerve signals
Lead to internal bleeding
In severe cases, stop the heart or breathing
If this happens:
Call emergency services immediately
Note the time of the bite and the snake’s appearance
Help the person lie down with head and shoulders raised
Reassure them and keep them as still as possible
Pressure Immobilisation Technique
Only use if there’s no pain at the bite site.
If there’s no pain at the bite site, apply a pressure bandage directly over the bite
Apply another bandage from the bite site up the limb (e.g. from just above the toes for a lower leg bite)
Apply a splint – any rigid object can be used
The First Aid Team’s Forestry First Aid course covers snake bites and many other scenarios relevant to outdoor, remote, or high-risk environments. Whether you’re a forestry worker, outdoor instructor, or just love exploring the wild – this course equips you with the knowledge and confidence to respond when it matters most.
