The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) have issued a public warning after several non-sterile alcohol-free wipes were found to be contaminated with Burkholderia stabilis.

These products have now been withdrawn from sale, but the agencies are urging people to check their home first aid kits as some wipes may still be in circulation.

What is the risk?

Burkholderia stabilis is a type of bacteria that rarely causes infection in healthy people.
However, it can cause serious illness in individuals with certain health conditions, including:

  • People with weakened immune systems

  • Patients with cystic fibrosis

  • Individuals with intravenous lines at home

Between 2018 and 2025, there have been 48 confirmed cases of Burkholderia stabilis infection in the UK. These cases are now suspected to be linked to some non-sterile alcohol-free wipe products.

Which products are affected?

The following wipes have been withdrawn from sale:

  • ValueAid Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes

  • Microsafe Moist Wipe Alcohol Free

  • Steroplast Sterowipe Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes

⚠️ In addition, testing also found contamination in Reliwipe Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes. While the strain detected in these wipes was not linked to the outbreak, the safety of these products cannot be guaranteed.

Guidance for the public

The UKHSA and MHRA are clear:

❌ Do not use non-sterile alcohol-free wipes on injuries, wounds, or broken skin.

❌ Do not use them to clean intravenous lines.

✅ Use sterile wipes or sterile saline solution when cleaning wounds.

These wipes are not routinely used in the NHS, but may still be found in home first aid kits.

Check your home first aid kit today and safely dispose of any of the affected products.
Switching to sterile wipes or saline solution ensures your first aid kit remains safe and effective.
