From choking hazards to minor burns, knowing what to do in the first few moments of an incident can prevent a minor mishap from becoming a serious emergency. Here’s a quick guide to staying safe this Valentine’s Day.

Choking on Chocolates

It might sound dramatic, but choking can happen quickly and without warning.

Signs of severe choking (adult or child over 1):

  • Inability to speak, cough or breathe

  • Silent or ineffective coughing

  • Clutching the throat

  • Turning blue

If the person can cough, encourage them to keep coughing.

If they cannot cough, speak or breathe:

Give 5 back blows

  • Lean them forward

  • Deliver five firm blows between the shoulder blades

If the obstruction does not clear:

Give 5 abdominal thrusts

  • Stand behind them

  • Pull inward and upward sharply

Alternate 5 back blows and 5 abdominal thrusts until:

  • The object is expelled

  • They begin breathing normally

  • Or they become unresponsive

If the person becomes unresponsive, call 999 immediately and begin CPR.

Rose Thorn Puncture Wounds

A small puncture wound may seem harmless, but thorns can introduce bacteria deep into tissue, increasing the risk of infection.

What to do:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly

  • Rinse the wound under clean running water

  • Carefully remove any visible debris

  • Pat dry and cover with a sterile dressing

Seek medical advice if:

  • Redness or swelling spreads

  • Pus develops

  • Pain increases

  • The wound is deep

  • Tetanus vaccinations are not up to date

Even small wounds require proper cleaning and monitoring.

Candle Burns

For minor burns:

  • Cool the burn under cool running water for 20 minutes

  • Remove jewellery or tight items near the area (unless stuck)

  • Cover loosely with cling film

Do not:

  • Apply butter, creams or oils

  • Use ice directly on the burn

  • Burst blisters

Call 999 for:

  • Burns larger than the palm of the hand

  • Burns affecting the face, hands, feet or genitals

  • Electrical or chemical burns
